I believe methodology or approaches are adopted based on organizational maturity attained via experiences and lesson learned in Project Management. Organizations continue to evolve the methodologies or approaches based on vision, strategy and other similar factors so that projects remained aligned to the long term goals.
I don’t see any reason why we should adhere to a set methodology as it has been established based on learnings coming from successes and failures. However I do also see a need to tailor the methodology in accordance to project risk, size and stakeholders so that adequate rigor can be established.
